When working with children, I use a combination of experiential play therapy, music therapy, and Collaborative Problem Solving. Children are not just little adults! Direct talk therapy is rarely effective. Play and music therapy engage children on a safe, non-verbal level and support the natural healing process.
Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) was developed by Doctors Ross Greene (author of "The Explosive Child") and Stuart Ablon and has proven very effective in working with oppositional/ defiant children. It involves a focused, multi-step process of assessing a child's skills and abilities to deal with various situations, identifying triggers in the environment, and implementing new strategies to help children and parents work together to develop solutions.
